Adding James Harden has certainly heighted the intrigue around the Los Angeles Clippers this season, but how much of the on-court reality will he change? The franchise went all-in on two hometown wings with lengthy injury histories, and the result has been repeated playoff exits when the Clippers do not have the depth to overcome those inevitable injuries. Harden will not solve any of that.
And he will not help solve the Dallas Mavericks tonight, as Luka Doncic is always content to outscore an opponent rather than engage in a defensive scrap. This spread may have neared a pick’em in the NBA odds, but that will not scare us off in our free NBA picks and predictions for Clippers vs. Mavericks on November 10.

Clippers vs Mavericks predictions
James Harden played 31 and 36 minutes, respectively, in his first two games with the Clippers, scoring 17 and 12 points. His 11-to-7 assist-to-turnover ratio may best underscore how clunky this roster will become. Harden prefers a slow game. Russell Westbrook wants only to race. Each of them is best with the ball in his hands, as is true for Kawhi Leonard and, arguably, Paul George.
It is no coincidence Los Angeles lost those two games both outright and against the spread, most notably stumbling to a 7-point loss at Brooklyn on Wednesday despite being favored by 5.5.
At some point this season, Harden will find a two-week groove that incites playoff wonderings from Steve Ballmer’s faithful, but it may not be until January or February. For now, this experiment just looks misguided, and the Mavericks will capitalize.
If Harden is playing 30-plus minutes, who will he guard? Luka Doncic? Please. Kyrie Irving? Come on now. And sticking him to Tim Hardaway Jr. risks losing the Mavericks’ best marksman for wide-open 3s. Matching Harden to Grant Williams’ minutes would play right into Dallas’s hands, quite possibly wanting to defend Harden with Williams so as to disrupt his initiation of the Clippers’ offense.
So now he is an offensive liability in that he lessens Westbrook’s effective frenetic play. And while easing Leonard’s workload, he will also take away from Leonard’s offensive control. Harden is a defensive liability in that teams with multiple ball-handling dangers at guard will hunt him until he is giving up points.
Add in Doncic’s understanding of an in-season tournament — it is a European concept in every way, and those versions have worked well enough to encourage NBA commissioner Adam Silver even as the public response early in this domestic attempt has been tepid at best — should give him some added motivation.
Doncic knows the fun that can come from winning an in-season tournament. Elimination moments are not going to give him hesitation. He alone would be reason to pick Dallas to win tonight, the Harden worries simply add conviction.
My best bet: Mavericks pick’em (-105 at Caesars)

Dallas has looked the part of an Over team this season, 6-2 to the Over so far and falling short in one of those exceptions by just half a point. That is half the reason for cowardly dodging a full-Game Under despite Los Angeles hitting the Under in both of Harden’s Games and by 16 and 38.5 points, respectively.
The Clippers look far from, what’s the word, good.
A Doncic second-half flurry could propel this game toward an Over, and one of those may be outright expected. Again, the in-season tournament may as well have been crafted for someone with Luka’s background and personality in mind.
He has reached 30 points in five of the Mavericks’ eight games this season, including 31 on Wednesday against the Raptors' nuisance of a defense.

Clippers vs Mavericks spread and Over/Under analysis
Dallas opened as a 2.5-point favorite on Thursday, a number that began ticking toward -1 or even pick’em early Friday morning. Ascribing any line value to the likely absence of Maxi Kleber (doubtful) or the uncertainty of Dereck Lively (questionable) would be extreme, but perhaps some movement can be tied to the possibility of both of them being sidelined tonight.
Their size would simply be something to exploit against Los Angeles, helping open up the floor for Luka.
The total opened as low as 232 before climbing all day Friday to 237, perhaps lending some thought to a full-Game Under despite that uneasiness in the above same-Game parlay, simply because getting the best number on the market is never a bad piece of process.
