James Harden's return to action: Rockets outlast 76ers in double overtime, pull out 132-123 victory

James Harden made his highly anticipated return to the Philadelphia 76ers active lineup on Monday night against the team he spent the bulk of his career with -- the Houston Rockets. Harden last played in a game for Philly on Nov. 2, against the Washington Wizards. He injured his foot during that contest and has been sidelined with a right foot tendon strain since. The Sixers played 14 games in Harden's absence and went 8-6 during that span. Harden may have been out for a month, but he was immediately tasked with playing some major minutes. Sixers coach Doc Rivers said that Harden would be on a minutes restriction before the game against Houston, but an additional 10 minutes were needed to determine a victor . By the time the second overtime ended, Harden had logged 38 minutes of action . In that time, he tallied 21 points, seven assists, and four rebounds, but his return and resulting production weren't ...

Lakers, Mavericks both gripe about officiating in controversial double-overtime slugfest

After 47 minutes and 58 seconds of rugby disguised as basketball, it looked as though the Los Angeles Lakers were going to escape their Thursday tilt with the Dallas Mavericks with a victory. After inbounding the ball with a tied score and six seconds remaining, the double-teamed LeBron James swung the ball over to an open Troy Brown Jr., who geared up for a game-winning 3-pointer but was seemingly smacked in the process.  The ball fell short, but Brown would have three chances to win the game at the line -- right? Wrong. No whistle arrived. The buzzer sounded. The Lakers and Mavericks went to overtime. After 10 minutes and two overtime periods, Dallas emerged with the 119-115 victory. The Lakers weren't exactly pleased with the outcome. "It looked clear as day that it was a foul," coach Darvin Ham said after the Game . James was less diplomatic. "That's a f---ing foul," he said, from a...

76ers narrowly survive disastrous late collapse vs. Lakers thanks to missed free throws, dominant overtime

Like Gloria Clemente wisely observed in "White Men Can't Jump," sometimes when you win, you really lose. The Philadelphia 76ers escaped Wells Fargo Center with a 133-122 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night, but they took a big, fat "L" in terms of late-game execution. The Sixers seemed to have put the game away, holding a 16-point lead with less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter, but that's when the Lakers slowly started chipping away at the lead. Even with a bit of a scoring lull, Philadelphia still held a nine-point lead with 35 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, which most people might say would give the Sixers a 99.99 percent chance of winning the game. Well, folks, welcome to the 0.01 percent. After a Patrick Beverley layup, two Anthony Davis free throws and two turnovers by De'Anthony Melton (who had an otherwise spectacular Game ), a...
