Maxi Kleber injury update: Mavericks forward out indefinitely with hamstring tear

After a 15-point loss at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers Wednesday night, the Dallas Mavericks are back to being a .500 team with a 14-14 record. To make matters worse, the team announced Thursday that forward Maxi Kleber will be out indefinitely with a right hamstring tear. This is a significant blow to a Mavericks roster that is already thin in depth, especially in the frontcourt.  Kleber provides the Mavericks with floor spacing as a 6-10 big who can knock down 3s at a consistent clip. But even more so, Kleber is one of Dallas' best defenders, and without him in the rotation, the Mavs' already lackluster defense will suffer even more. With Kleber sidelined for what could potentially be between 6-8 weeks, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania, the Mavericks are going to have to rely on Dwight Powell and Christian Wood even more. Though Powell doesn't give Dallas any spacing on the of

How Tyrese Haliburton's historic assist-to-turnover efforts are setting the tone for surprising Pacers

SAN FRANCISCO -- Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle looked sternly at the stat sheet to begin his postgame conference, just moments before he would unleash an avalanche of praise toward his dynamic rookie guard. No, not Bennedict Mathurin -- the No. 6 overall pick in the 2022 draft who leads the NBA in bench scoring. The other rookie guard. After an improbable road win over the Golden State Warriors in early December without their two best players, the conversation was solely focused on Andrew Nembhard, whom Carlisle promptly dubbed a "top 10" talent in his draft class despite being a second-round pick. Nembhard was the best player on a court he shared with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, putting up 31 points and 13 assists against in a 112-104 win. At one point late in the fourth quarter, Nembhard left Curry no recourse but to shake his head in disbelief after a demoralizing step-back 3-

Stephen Curry injury update: Warriors star out with shoulder subluxation, will reportedly miss about a month

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry will be out of the lineup with a left shoulder subluxation (i.e. a partial dislocation), the team announced on Thursday. While the Warriors have not released an official timeline for his return, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported that Curry will be sidelined for at least two weeks. Curry will not require surgery and is expected to return to the court in about a month, Charania reported during an appearance on Bally Sports.  ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski first reported  that Curry would miss a few weeks.  Curry left the Warriors' 125-119 loss after hurting his shoulder in the third quarter. On the preceding play, Curry missed a 3-pointer and the long rebound led to a Pacers fast break. As Jalen Smith went to the basket, Curry reached for a steal and hurt his shoulder in the process.  Steph went to the locker room after appearing to injure his left s

Warriors' Stephen Curry ejected after throwing mouthpiece into stands out of frustration with Jordan Poole

Image
The Golden State Warriors and the Memphis Grizzlies battled Wednesday in the latest chapter of one of the NBA's growing rivalries, but Stephen Curry wasn't allowed to take part in the final 74 seconds of the nail-biting win due to one of the more bizarre ejections you'll ever see. With 1:23 remaining in the fourth quarter and the Warriors leading by two, Klay Thompson missed a mid-range jumper that would've doubled the Warriors' lead. Donte DiVincenzo grabbed the offensive board and quickly passed to Jordan Poole, and that's where things got out of hand. With Curry calling for the ball, Poole threw up a quick 3-pointer. He missed. Curry, out of apparent frustration with Poole, angrily tossed his mouthpiece into the stands. The officials immediately ejected him from the game. NBA seeks to add All-Star Game drama by moving the player draft to just before the game

The NBA has made a slight tweak to its annual All-Star Draft. In past years, the draft has come weeks before the All-Star Game , allowing player s and fans to know who was playing for which team well in advance. That's going to change this season. The league announced on TNT Tuesday that this season, the draft will be held live at 7:30 p.m. ET,  just ahead of tipoff of the Feb. 19 All-Star Game .  The mechanics of the draft won't change. The two captains will be the player from each conference that receives the most fan votes. Right now, those players are LeBron James and Kevin Durant. Those players will then draft four other starters each from the designated pool of starters followed by seven reserves each from the designated pool of 14 reserves. Coaches will be assigned in advance, with the No. 1 seeded coach in each conference joining the captain from their corresponding conference.  The change adds

Kings remind NBA of their offensive firepower with 12 first-quarter 3-pointers during rout of Grizzlies

The Sacramento Kings have been one of the biggest surprises in the league this season, thanks in large part to their explosive offense. Entering Monday night's showdown with the Memphis Grizzlies, the Kings were scoring 117.7 points per 100 possessions, which ranked second only behind the Denver Nuggets.  Early on, they gave the Grizzlies, and the rest of the league, another reminder of their offensive firepower by pouring in 12 3-pointers in the first quarter to tie an NBA record for the most 3s made in a single quarter . They went 12-of-13 from downtown in the first and scored 47 points, and didn't slow down the rest of the way. They finished 22-of-40 from 3 in a 133-100 win.  The Kings just tied an NBA record with 12 threes in the first quarter 🤯 📲 https://t.co/WjxYAo0Ivs pic.twitter.com/LmsBd5DVXi — NBA (@NBA) January 24, 2023 For the most part, it was pretty sim

LeBron James leads Lakers to huge comeback vs. Blazers with 37 points, now 224 shy of all-time record

The Lakers rallied from a 25-point halftime deficit to beat the Blazers on Sunday, marking the NBA's biggest second-half comeback this season and matched the largest second-half comeback of LeBron James' regular-season career.  James was no small part of the rally. He had 17 of his 37 points in the third quarter, by the end of which the Lakers had trimmed that 25-point deficit to just five.  With the 37 points , James moves even closer to becoming the NBA 's all -time leading scorer, a distinction currently held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. You can see below where James' pursuit of Jabbar's mark stands.  ALL-TIME SCORING LEADER CAREER POINTS POINTS TO PASS Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 38,387 ___ LeBron James 38,164 224 For the season, James is averaging 29.8 points per game. If he maintains that pace, he will need just eight more games to pass Abdul-Jabbar. If James doesn't sit out any games between now

Warriors' Klay Thompson held out in loss to Magic due to knee soreness; Steve Kerr calls move 'precautionary'

The Golden State Warriors have had guys in and out of the lineup all season due to injury, and their game of musical players continued on Saturday night against the Orlando Magic.  The Warriors got two key contributors back for their 115-101 loss to Orlando in Andre Iguodala and Andrew Wiggins. Iguodala made his season debut in the game, while Wiggins played in his first game in over a month after missing the previous 15 contests due to an adductor injury and then an illness. But while those players entered the lineup, another exited.  Klay Thompson was ruled out of the game shortly before tipoff due to left knee soreness. The news was concerning given that the left knee is the knee in which Thompson suffered a torn ACL in 2019. The issues doesn't seem too serious however. After the game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr called the move to sit Thompson "precautionary" after Thompson felt some soreness duri

Serge Ibaka, Bucks mutually agree to find veteran big man a new team via trade, per report

The Milwaukee Bucks and Serge Ibaka have mutually agree d to find the veteran big man a new team through trade , according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. Ibaka has been away from the team due to what has been described as personal reasons. The Bucks acquired Ibaka at last season's trade deadline and did so largely due to the questions surrounding the Health of Brook Lopez. Now Lopez is Health y and thriving, and with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis entrenched, there simply aren't minutes available for Ibaka. If he wants to play, he'll need a new team.

How LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and Darvin Ham are all contributing to Lakers' late-game offensive woes

LeBron James is on the shortlist of players you'd most want to give the ball to on a critical possession late in a key Game . Trailing by three with roughly 50 seconds remaining in Wednesday's loss to the Sacramento Kings, the Los Angeles Lakers managed to do just that. What followed was a sequence that is growing far too familiar to Lakers fans. James used a screen from Kendrick Nunn to build a head of steam and rampage toward the basket. Three Kings defenders awaited him there. He nearly went up after a spin move, but with no space to operate and finding little breathing room while working off of his pivot foot, he passed the ball back out, demanded it back behind the arc, and fired and ill-fated 3-pointer. Miss. The sequence didn't cost the Lakers the Game . Still, it was the latest in a string of recent offensive misadventures that have held an otherwise strong Lakers team below .500. They scored

Wemby Watch: Spurs are dialing up a 1996-97 special -- and hoping Victor Wembanyama is on the other side

A blue moon flew over South Texas Tuesday night. The San Antonio Spurs managed to hold the Brooklyn Nets to a measly 98 points to earn their 14th victory of the season. That might not sound very important, but it was the first time San Antonio managed to hold an opponent below 100 points in more than two months. The last time came against the Milwaukee Bucks, who were missing their three best players, back on Nov. 11. Every team in between managed to reach triple figures -- and most of them scored a good deal more. At roughly the halfway point of the season, San Antonio is on pace to have the worst defense in the NBA . No, actually, make that NBA History . And it's not especially close. Entering Tuesday's Game s, the Spurs were allowing 119.5 points per 100 possessions. The record entering this season was 116.8, set by the 2018-19 Cleveland Cavaliers. Their half-court defense, according to Cleaning the Gl

Lakers allow Russell Westbrook to botch final possession after Darvin Ham elects not to call timeout

Russell Westbrook played a good game for the Lakers on Sunday. He finished with 20 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists, notching his fourth triple-double off the bench , the most in recorded history. He does good things for this Lakers team. He will never be a good fit with LeBron James, but he does good things.  Those good things, unfortunately, rarely come in crunch time, where Westbrook is an impulsive, wild-card player who simply cannot be counted on to reign in his bullheaded confidence and get out of his own -- and the Lakers' -- way.  It happened again on Sunday when Westbrook decided to go one on one with Joel Embiid in the Game 's final possession , with the Lakers trailing by one, rather than get the ball to James. To say the possession didn't work out would be an understatement. It was a disaster.  This is an indescribably bad possession . pic.twitter.com/isDj3P77PP — Chris Ma
