NBA trade deadline: What is an expiring contract and why do some teams value them so much?

Image
You’ve probably heard about expiring contracts in the NBA , but what you may not know is exactly what they are and why they can be the cause of serious concern for many franchises within the league. With that said, join us for the low down on how they work. What is an expiring contract in the NBA ? It’s exactly as it sounds. When players are coming to the end of their contracts, we can say that it’s expiring and with that, a whole host of factors come into play. Before we get to those, however, it’s worth noting that in recent years value of large expiring contracts has begun to decrease. This, of course, is largely due to the fact that recent years have seen the NBA earn more in revenue, such that deals that are coming to an end have lost value. Remember, the NBA adheres to what can be considered a “soft” salary cap i.e., there are numerous ways in which teams can exceed it without being punished. What that has led to is teams placing less focus on expiring contracts as a means to...

LeBron James’ agent Rich Paul clears air on trade rumors. What did he say?

Image
The agent of the Lakers’ star has not only been his closest business associate for many years, but his friend. With that in mind, it stands to reason that word when it comes to his client’s future, his word can be trusted. The Los Angeles Lakers in context Last season, the Los Angeles Lakers scraped into the NBA’s Play-In-Tournament with a record of 43-39 and then managed to make the playoffs after defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves in overtime. It was a big deal. Then, they improved to dismiss the Memphis Grizzlies in six games, before making believers out of the skeptics with the elimination of the defending champion Golden State Warriors. Yes, they were eventually swept by the eventual champion Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference finals, but the point is, it was a respectable run for a franchise that has struggled in recent years. .@stephenasmith makes a BIG proposal to LeBron 👀 "If LeBron James wants to put himself in position to win a championship, get traded to the ...

Will the Lakers make any more trades before the 2024 trade deadline?

Image
The Lakers must choose between relying on LeBron and Davis or paying for another star player for the third year in a row. They have various needs, including better defense, shooting, a backup center, and two-way players . Pelinka can move contracts, but only Reaves is valuable, but also, in the words of the Lakers front office, one of the rare players in their roster who is untouchable. Other options include D’Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Max Christie, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and Maxwell Lewis. Lakers reportedly won't be trading LeBron, but can they acquire another superstar before the trade deadline 👀 pic.twitter.com/HUA80mUoFF — Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) February 2, 2024 The Los Angeles Lakers have some flexibility in trading their first-round picks. They can trade one before February 8th and attach two additional first-rounders to trades starting in July. They also have a lot of second-round picks. However, the front office favors keeping the picks, whi...

Jrue said he was a Milwaukee Buck for life...the day before being traded

Back in April, when the Milwaukee Bucks were eliminated from the playoffs, Jrue Holiday made it clear that he had no intention of retiring , but just days ago, he took it even further and said that he would like to be a Buck at the end of his career. In an interview with Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel , Holiday said that he had no desire to play for another team. “Before I even won here I think I said I’m a Buck for life and I mean that like deep in my heart. I don’t want to play for any other team. I think we have a chance to continue to do great things as the Bucks team and organization so I want to be in Milwaukee.” Unfortunately and with terrible timing, Holiday was trade d away the next day as part of a three-team deal for the Bucks to acquire Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers, who are now in immediate trade talks with other teams. Some of his potential landing spots include the Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, and Philadelphia 76ers. Source: ...

Jazz don't plan to trade Lauri Markkanen or Jordan Clarkson, set high price on Jarred Vanderbilt, per report

The Utah Jazz trade d pretty much everybody that wasn't nailed down last offseason. Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert and Bojan Bogdanovic were all dealt in an apparent rebuilding effort, and as such, it was widely expected that the Jazz would continue to offload veterans during the season to set the stage for a lengthy tank. Instead, they have been the surprise success story of the season. They are 12-7 through 19 games and currently occupy the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. As such, it seems as though their plans are changing. According to Yahoo's Jake Fischer, the Jazz are signaling to other teams that they plan to keep breakout forward Lauri Markkanen as well as incumbent guard Jordan Clarkson. Markkanen was acquired in the Mitchell trade and is a strong candidate for Most Improved Player this season as he's averaged 22.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Clarkson was in place last season, but ...

The Lakers wanted 20 games to evaluate the roster before making a trade, so what have we learned in that time?

The Los Angeles Lakers probably should have traded Russell Westbrook before the season. It's hard to argue otherwise when they're 8-12 through 20 games. As well as Westbrook has adapted to a bench role, there is simply no path to contention that involves a $47 million sixth man. The Lakers surely knew this before the season began. They didn't act on it. Part of the reported logic was a desire to see how this team would actually look on the floor. Well, the proposed 20-game timeline has come and gone. It's December. A quarter of the season is behind the Lakers, and while there are still questions to be answered, we have a pretty good idea of what this team is. So through more than a month of basketball, what have we learned ? What do the Lakers now know that they can act upon in trade negotiations? Here are the five biggest lessons this team has learned through the first month and a half of basket...

Knicks' Cam Reddish says he hasn't requested a trade, doesn't know why he's out of rotation

On Wednesday afternoon, the New York Daily News ' Stefan Bondy reported that the New York Knicks were working with Cam Reddish's representatives to find a trade. Reddish had received his first healthy DNP-CD of the season in their previous game and he'd logged a season-low nine minutes in the game before that.  Reddish had not spoken to reporters since the DNP-CD, but he did so after getting another one against his former team on Wednesday night. And he denied that he has asked out.  "I haven't requested any trades, Reddish said, via the New York Post 's Peter Botte, after the Knicks' 113-89 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Madison Square Garden. "I have not. Y'all seem to know more than me, for real. I don't know what y'all talking about, but I haven't requested no trade, nothing like that." Reddish told reporters that he's "not sure" why he lo...

Warriors trade rumors: James Wiseman deal becoming more realistic, could save Golden State $131 million

The Golden State Warriors have remained steadfast in their commitment to James Wiseman, Moses Moody, and Jonathan Kuminga. All three of them were drafted with a lottery pick and with the hope that they would act as a collective bridge to the next era of contention.  That hasn't happened, and the prevailing question remains when the Warriors might pull the plug on their youth experiment and strike a deal to either bring back actual contributing players or save some money. While Kuminga has cemented himself as a part of this current rotation, neither Wiseman nor Moody can get on the floor, and word is starting to percolate that Golden State might finally be ready to discuss at least the possibility of moving on one or both of them.  From Anthony Slater of The Athletic: The noise around the league the last couple of days is an increased willingness from the Warriors to engage in conversation and explore the idea ...

Lakers trade rumors: Bulls not interested in Russell Westbrook even with draft picks attached, per report

The Los Angeles Lakers have spent months seeking a partner on a Russell Westbrook trade, and with the Indiana Pacers firmly in the mix for an Eastern Conference playoff spot, all eyes have turned to the Chicago Bulls. At 11-14, their season hasn't gone as planned. Their roster is aging and riddled with injury-prone players. DeMar DeRozan has spoken frequently about how much he wanted to join the Lakers in 2021. Alex Caruso came from the Bulls to Los Angeles. Nikola Vucevic and his hefty expiring salary would give the Lakers the shooting center they've been looking for. So... are the Bulls a possible fit? Not according to Joe Cowley of the Chicago-Sun Times , who reports that Bulls general manager Arturas Karnisovas has no interest in a Westbrook trade whether or not the Lakers attach their two tradable first-round picks in 2027 and 2029. The Bulls instead appear to be determined to wait out the return ...

After Kyrie Irving's trade request, Nets try to focus on anything but his future: 'No idea, I just work here'

NEW YORK -- When Kyrie Irving's trade request was reported on Friday, Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton's phone started going crazy.  "I was taking a nap," Claxton said. "And I looked in one of my group chats and I saw it and I was like, 'Wow.' Just caught me off guard. But it is what it is." Nets wing Royce O'Neale said he was "surprised" by Irving's trade request, adding that he found out the "same way everybody else did: Twitter."  "We're just like everybody else," Claxton said. "We're caught off guard." Irving's future in Brooklyn is uncertain. The Nets have three games before Thursday's 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, starting with Saturday's matchup against the Washington Wizards. Irving "reported some calf soreness," coach Jacque Vaughn said, so he'll miss the Wizards game. Claxton said he learned...

Serge Ibaka, Bucks mutually agree to find veteran big man a new team via trade, per report

The Milwaukee Bucks and Serge Ibaka have mutually agree d to find the veteran big man a new team through trade , according to The Athletic's Shams Charania. Ibaka has been away from the team due to what has been described as personal reasons. The Bucks acquired Ibaka at last season's trade deadline and did so largely due to the questions surrounding the Health of Brook Lopez. Now Lopez is Health y and thriving, and with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis entrenched, there simply aren't minutes available for Ibaka. If he wants to play, he'll need a new team. ...
