Chelsea's Premier League record on the opening day
When Jose Mourinho oversaw Tottenham's 1-0 defeat to Everton on 13 September 2020, it was the first time the "Special One" had tasted defeat on the opening day of a Premier League season.
The all-time great manager's reputation was forged at Porto before reaching new heights at Chelsea. Mourinho's tactical periodisation revolutionised methods used by coaches in the Premier League and his Blues emerged as the country's dominant force under his tutelage on multiple occasions.
Mourinho's pristine opening day record so often set the tone at Stamford Bridge and the Portuguese manager is a major reason why Chelsea boast the second-best record in season openers in Premier League History.

Mourinho has overseen seven of Chelsea's 31 Premier League season-openers, winning six and drawing one. His first, a 1-0 win over Man Utd, was certainly his most significant as the Blues then went on to secure their maiden Premier League crown.
In fact, Mourinho won his first six opening-day games with the Blues before the infamous 2-2 draw with Swansea to open up the 2015/16 campaign. The contest foreshadowed Chelsea's disastrous season after winning the title in 2014/15 and is best remembered for Mourinho's berating of physio Eva Carneiro.
Anyway, that's enough of Jose.
Chelsea weren't great following the Premier League's inauguration and failed to win their first two season openers. Their results improved as the decade went on before they suffered back-to-back away defeats to Coventry.
However, Chelsea failed to lose a single opening day encounter between 1999 and 2017, winning 15 and drawing three. This run included the Blues' most emphatic win; a 6-0 thrashing of West Brom to open up the 2010/11 season under Carlo Ancelotti.
The west London club have won their last three opening day games, two of which were away from home, but their last defeat, a 4-0 thumping at Old Trafford, was the biggest they've incurred.
