It begins with the Philadelphia 76ers hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers before the Milwaukee Bucks pay a visit to the Minnesota Timberwolves. This was supposed to be the Philadelphia 76ers ’ year. Joel Embiid was coming off an MVP season, and despite his dominant play, new head coach Nick Nurse was brought in to take Embiid and the Sixers to the next level. Which meant a deep playoff run. The early returns were promising. Somehow Embiid looked to be even better than he did in his MVP campaign, Tyrese Maxey looked like a budding superstar, and Philly was winning a lot of Game s while standing among the favorites in the NBA championship odds. Then the other shoe dropped. Embiid hurt his knee and now the Sixers are praying he can make it back in time for the playoffs. Damian Lillard stole the show at the 73rd NBA all-star game Sunday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, winning the game’s MVP with 39 points behind 11 made three-pointers, the first of his career . The Milwaukee Bucks point guard hit threes from the halfcourt line on in and sprinkled in a few layups for good measure to help the Eastern Conference win 211-186. Fittingly, Lillard made his first basket by pulling up from the literal NBA logo on the court and knocking it down from 30 feet . He followed that up with two more threes. Lillard also had six assists and a steal. The highlight of Lillard’s play came with 6:54 remaining in the third quarter when the former Weber State star pulled up from beyond the mid-court line and knocked down a deep three -pointer . Year 2 of the Luka Doncic-Kyrie Irving experiment is going a little better than Year 1 which resulted in the Dallas Mavericks missing the playoffs for the first time since Doncic’s rookie season. Despite some early season ups and downs, Doncic and Irving have found their rhythm, and the Mavericks will come out of the NBA All-Star break with a 32-23 record, sitting in seventh spot in the Western Conference standings but outsiders in the NBA Title odds. The NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night was one for the books. Although it lacked competition, it broke multiple records, including the most points in the game’s 73-year history. The Eastern Conference dominated the Western Conference, winning 211-186 . The previous record of 196 was set by the West in 2016. Damian Lillard, the point guard for the Milwaukee Bucks, won the All-Star MVP award, scoring an impressive 39 points. The total combined points of both teams, 397, smashed the previous record of 374 set in 2017. The East made 42 3-pointers, breaking the mark of 35 set by Team LeBron in 2019. The two teams combined for 193 points in the first half, breaking the any-half record of 191 set last year, and the East tied an any-half record by scoring 104 by intermission. While the NBA’s All-Star Weekend still had its regular 3-point contest, there was a unique spin on the event this year with the Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry going head to head with WNBA sensation and New York Liberty sniper, Sabrina Ionescu to establish who is superior from beyond the arc.
