2023 NBA All-Star Game Mock Draft: Predicting how LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo fill out the rosters

LeBron James is currently on one of the great random streaks in the History of Sports . The NBA introduced an All-Star Draft as an alternative to its old East vs. West format six years ago. James has been elected a captain in each of those six seasons. In the first five, the team he drafted ultimately won the Game . This season, he'll look to move to 6-0. Standing in his way is Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who drafted against James and lost in both 2019 and 2020. Now he's hoping the third time will be the charm, so in order to attempt to predict how the two captains who act when All-Star Sunday arrives, CBS Sports is holding a mock All-Star Draft. Representing James will be resident Lakers expert Sam Quinn, and representing Antetokounmpo will be Milwaukee maven Jack Maloney. James, as the leading overall vote-getter, will pick first on the starters. Antetokounmpo will pick first with re...

James Harden's return to action: Rockets outlast 76ers in double overtime, pull out 132-123 victory

James Harden made his highly anticipated return to the Philadelphia 76ers active lineup on Monday night against the team he spent the bulk of his career with -- the Houston Rockets. Harden last played in a game for Philly on Nov. 2, against the Washington Wizards. He injured his foot during that contest and has been sidelined with a right foot tendon strain since. The Sixers played 14 games in Harden's absence and went 8-6 during that span. Harden may have been out for a month, but he was immediately tasked with playing some major minutes. Sixers coach Doc Rivers said that Harden would be on a minutes restriction before the game against Houston, but an additional 10 minutes were needed to determine a victor . By the time the second overtime ended, Harden had logged 38 minutes of action . In that time, he tallied 21 points, seven assists, and four rebounds, but his return and resulting production weren't ...

Pacers rookie Andrew Nembhard upstages Stephen Curry with performance he'll never forget

One week after draining a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to drop the Lakers, Pacers rookie Andrew Nembhard put together a night against Stephen Curry and the Warriors on Monday that he won't ever forget. In leading Indiana, which was playing without Tyrese Haliburton and Myles Turner, to a 112-104 victory, Nembhard dropped 31 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds on five 3-pointers in 41 minutes, all of which go down as early career highs.  Those numbers put Nembhard in some pretty elite company.  Andrew Nembhard tonight: 31 PTS 8 REB 13 AST 5-7 3P Joins Kidd, Steph and Trae as the only rookie s ever with 30/8/10 with 5 3P in a Game . pic.twitter.com/e5xQtuAPGn — StatMuse (@statmuse) December 6, 2022 Meanwhile, Curry had his worst Game of the season, finishing with 12 points on 3-of-17 shooting, including 2-of-10 from 3. It's not often that Curry gets upstaged like that by anyone,...

Thanks to Lakers' recent uptick, Pelicans' odds at landing Victor Wembanyama are starting to fade

Shed a tear for the New Orleans Pelicans, folks. The Western Conference's No. 2 seed, owners of 10 total first-round picks in the next seven drafts along with three potentially valuable swaps, are fading out of the race of Victor Wembanyama. This of course has nothing to do with their own performance. Frankly, it would've been practically unfair to give such an incredible prospect to a team that already ranks in the top six in both offense and defense. No, their hopes were pinned to the rapidly ascending Los Angeles Lakers. After a 2-10 start that included literally the worst shooting stretch in NBA History , the Lakers are clawing their way back to .500 behind the very player that put New Orleans in the race for Wembanyama in the first place. Anthony Davis looks like an MVP candidate again, LeBron James is making all of his 3-pointers, Russell Westbrook has embraced the bench, and if this continues, New...

Kyrie Irving says he won't discuss long-term future with Mavericks to avoid any 'unwanted distractions'

Kyrie Irving does not want to talk about a potential future with the Dallas Mavericks after this season. During his introductory press conference on Monday alongside Mavericks president and general manager Nico Harrison and Markieff Morris, Irving was asked what he would need to see from the organization to sign a long-term deal with the club.  He declined to answer directly and instead asked the media to refrain from further questions on the topic. His response in full:  "I would love to just have the respect of you guys and everybody the rest of the season of just -- continuously asking me that just puts unwarranted diestructions on us and our team. I've dealt with it before and it's very emotionallly draining to ask questions like 'what's the long term? What's the long term? What is it?'  "I will say, from the start of when I came here, there's been nothing but a warm embra...

Knicks' Cam Reddish says he hasn't requested a trade, doesn't know why he's out of rotation

On Wednesday afternoon, the New York Daily News ' Stefan Bondy reported that the New York Knicks were working with Cam Reddish's representatives to find a trade. Reddish had received his first healthy DNP-CD of the season in their previous game and he'd logged a season-low nine minutes in the game before that.  Reddish had not spoken to reporters since the DNP-CD, but he did so after getting another one against his former team on Wednesday night. And he denied that he has asked out.  "I haven't requested any trades, Reddish said, via the New York Post 's Peter Botte, after the Knicks' 113-89 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Madison Square Garden. "I have not. Y'all seem to know more than me, for real. I don't know what y'all talking about, but I haven't requested no trade, nothing like that." Reddish told reporters that he's "not sure" why he lo...

NBA Rookie Rankings: Andrew Nembhard shines against Warriors; Keegan Murray making winning plays for Kings

Image
Without a doubt the leading story amongst the NBA rookies this week was Andrew Nembhard's standout performance in a 112-104 win over the Golden State Warriors. Nembhard outdueled reigning Finals MVP Stephen Curry, and dismantled Golden State's defense in the process. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle praised his rookie guard after the game, saying he probably should've gone higher than the 31st overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. "I've been saying that down the line, when there's a redraft of the '22 draft, he'd be a top 15 pick," Carlisle said. "I'm elevating that to a top 10 pick. He really is a special player." Given how much of an impact Nembhard has made on the Pacers since being inserted into the starting lineup, that's not a completely outrageous statement to make. We'll just have to wait and see if the rookie can continue the tear he's been on over t...

Nuggets' Jamal Murray hits game-winner to stun Damian Lillard, Trail Blazers in Western Conference thriller

The Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers always seem to produce magic when they step on the court together, and Thursday night's thriller would fit right in with their instant classic quadruple-overtime Game in the 2019 playoffs and the double-overtime affair from the 2021 postseason.  As the final contest of a light three-game night, these teams took center stage and closed the show in style. The lead changed hands a stunning nine times in the final three minutes, including four times in the final 30 seconds, before Jamal Murray hit a step-back 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds on the clock to give the Nuggets a 121-120 win in Portland.  JAMAL. NBA Power Rankings: Luka Doncic, Mavericks on fire; Celtics undeterred by loss; Pelicans, Grizzlies rising

Every season has injuries that complicate matters and sully the crystal ball we all try to use to determine who will be the last team standing come June, so it's nice to see star players getting back on the court. This week alone, former All-Stars Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Damian Lillard, James Harden, Chris Paul, Khris Middleton and Jarrett Allen all returned from lengthy absences, leading to the excitement surrounding those teams and ripples throughout their respective conferences. Another welcome sight, for the rest of the NBA at least, was a loss by the Boston Celtics, who fell to the Miami Heat in overtime. A quick winning streak later, however, and the Celtics are back on top of this week's Power Ran kings as the clear top team in the league. They're facing pressure, however, from the New Orleans Pelicans, who jumped two more spots this week to No. 2 behind Zion Williamson's potent offens...
